The Memorial to the Victims of Political Repressions in front of the school #5 was opened on October 1, 2006. The Author of the Project is sculptor V. Sargsyan, Head of the Design & Handicrafts Chair of the Khanty-Mansiysk Institute of Design & Handicrafts.
The monument was placed at the intersection of Sverdlov and Pionerskaya streets, the place where the building of the Commandant’s Office was situated in the past. The exiled people had come to that Office to get registered from 1937 till 1954. A 4-meter’s concrete stele, coated with granite, has a crack in the center. This crack symbolizes a broken heart which is still aching because of sufferings, marble logs stand for the houses of the exiled people, a female-shaped bronze figure – is a woman mourning for those who died as a result of repressions.
This Memorial is intended to preserve the tragic facts from our history for future generations.
